Lady Vike’s pull out a win over Wildcats

GUERNSEY – The varsity Guernsey-Sunrise girls basketball team were able to topple Banner County in an away game on Friday, 45-32.

“I’m so happy for the girls and how they played in Banner County. It’s hard to win on the road – especially when you’re missing two starters due to illness – but the ladies stepped,” head coach Curtis Cook said.

Led by Rylie Thompson (contributing 21 points) and Liberty Whitebird (netting 19 points) on offense, and Jordan Atwood on defense, the Lady Vikings started on the right foot with an 8-5 first quarter. They kept the momentum throughout the game and really took off in the second half, putting the ball in the bucket 26 times for a total of 45 points. The Wildcats could only hold onto 32 on their home turf. Dymond Dimas added five points to the board and Atwood netted two points for the team.

Games in Lusk and Lingle-Ft. Laramie were no less hard-fought, but the Guernsey girls succumbed to both teams.

In the February 5 game against Lusk, the Lady Vikings just couldn’t hit it in the net against the defense of the Lady Tigers. Whitebird was able to gain seven points for the team, Thompson grabbed four and Atwood nabbed one, for a final score of 57-12, Lusk.

On Saturday, the Guernsey girls tried to tackle the Lingle-Ft. Laramie Doggers, but came away with a loss, 21-49. The Lady Vikings’ momentum from the win the night before faded in the first quarter with a 5-8 start. By half-time they were able to gain another six points but couldn’t keep pace with the Lady Doggers. The last two quarters saw them adding another 10 points, but it wasn’t enough by the final buzzer.

Jacelyn Schiel netted the most points in the game with eight buckets. Nyquist was able to put in a shot from the field for three points, Dymond Dimas added three points, Whitebird gathered four points, and Thompson contributed three points.
