Vikings qualify 13 for state track meet

SUNDANCE—The Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings qualified 10 boys and three girls for the Wyoming Track and Field Championships to be held at Harry Geldien Stadium at the Kelly Walsh High School campus this weekend. The state meet begins Thursday, May 16 at 3 p.m. and concludes Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings’ four sprinters (all underclassmen) picked up places five through eight in the 100-meter dash, qualifying all for the state event in Casper. Jayden Wagner-Gross placed fifth (12.82), followed by Taylor Sterner (12.84), Gabe Milton (13.10) and Mario Garcia (13.23). Upton’s Ethan Schiller placed first with a time of 11.88. 

Sterner and Wagner-Gross also both qualified in the 200. Sterner clocked a 25.65 for fifth place and Wagner-Gross ran a 25.77 for seventh place. Quincy Paris of Midwest won in a time of 24.44. 

Conner Bristow ran a 58.47 to finish sixth in the 400 and qualified for the state event. Kannon Tippetts of Southeast placed first, running a 53.36.

Distance runners Domonic Ramirez and Phylip Morales both qualified to run at state in the 1600 and 3200. 

In the 1600, Ramirez placed fourth with a time of 5:22.51 and Morales ran a 5:38.28. Ramirez finished second in the 3200 with a time of 11:53.36 and Morales ran 12:25.79, taking fourth in the regional. 

Ethan Van Why of Prairie View, the charter school now operating in Chugwater, won first place in the 1600 to qualify for the state meet, the school’s only state competitor.

Upton’s Ben Carpenter took first in the 3200 with a time of 11:48.04.

Nathan VanNatter will represent the Vikes in the 300-meter hurdles at the state meet. He placed second in the regional, clocking a 48,88. First went to Vaun Pierson from Kaycee who ran a 45.20.

The four-man team of speedsters Milton, Sterner, Bristow and Wagner-Gross won the regional 4x100 in 47.40 and have an opportunity to get a state championship in the event.

Sterner will compete in Casper in the high jump after he claimed third in the regional, clearing the bar at 5-04.

Quincy Paris of Midwest placed first at 6-06.

VanNatter will also compete in the state triple jump finals after he placed fourth in the regional with a mark of 36-08.25. Schiller of Upton won with a distance of 44-03.50.

Kaiser Edwards placed seventh in the regional pole vault, clearing 6-06 to qualify for the state meet. First went to Cullen Davis of Upton with a height of 12-06.  

Joey Lewis took fifth in the regional’s discus throw, marking 103-10, good enough to put him on the Casper-bound team. Hulett’s Christian Reilly won the event with a distance of 125-07.

Upton won the boys’ team title with 187 points, followed by Kaycee (118), Southeast (88), Guernsey-Sunrise (81), Hanna-Elk Mountain (60), Hulett (54.5), Midwest (46.5), Prairie View (13) and Rock River (10).

Juliana Schiele will compete in the state finals in the 100 after she claimed eighth place at the regional meet with a time of 15.58. Destiny Cleveland of Kaycee won the event in 13.43.

Dymond Dimas qualified for the state meet as she finished sixth in the regional high jump, clearing the bar at 4-02. Cleveland of Kaycee placed first with a mark of 4-10. 

Schiele and Alyssa Nyquist will be the Vikings’ entries in the state pole vault. Schiele placed fourth, clearing 8-00 and Nyquist placed seventh at a height of 6-06.

Angie Logsdon of Southeast won the regional with a mark of 8-06.

Upton won the girls’ team title with 193 points, followed by Southeast (177), Hulett (81), Kaycee (62), Hanna-Elk Mountain (49), Rock River (24), Midwest (19), Arvada-Clearmont (18) and Guernsey-Sunrise (11).
