Vikings prepare for tough competition, return two starters

GUERNSEY –Head coach Steve Zimmerman is in his third year with the Vikings boys basketball team. Having coached boys basketball for 33 years for various schools, Zimmerman’s record with Guernsey-Sunrise High School is 21-23. The Vikings posted an 11-13 season record in 23-24, which was good for second in the conference standings. G-SHS finished third at the regional tournament and then went 0-2 at the state tournament in 2024.
The Vikings started the 2024-2025 season at the Burns tournament last week. Guernsey will have two returning starters and six returning letter winners this season. The two returning starters are Nathan VanNatter, a 6’0” senior wing; and Mason Collar, a 6’3” junior post.

In addition, coach Zimmerman is looking forward to contributions from Julian Rodriquez, a 5’10” senior forward; Issac Cdebaca, a 5’6” senior guard; Austin Gretch, a 5’9” junior guard; Tim Radcliffe, a 6’2” junior post; Conner Bristow, a 5’10” junior forward; Korbin Weinkauf, a 5’8” junior guard; Joey Lewis, a 6’4” sophomore post; and Jayden Wagner Gross, a 5’8” sophomore guard.
Coach Zimmerman predicts Lingle and Southeast will be tough opponents as they return nearly their entire team from last year. “Lusk was a very deep team that played in the 2A state championship. Both Lingle and Lusk were in 2A last year and are coming down to 1A this year,” Zimmerman said.
Guernsey looks to be fourth in the district behind Lingle, Southeast, and Lusk.In the region, Coach Zimmerman predicts Guernsey may finish sixth behind Lingle, Southeast, Upton, Lusk, and Hulett.
“The Vikings are having to reload our perimeter positions relying on young players,” coach Zimmerman said about the outlook for the team. “Our interior play should be solid, especially with our size, last year’s experience, and rebounding ability. Overall, the team developed depth and experience last year. It will be a good battle inside the team to earn key positions. The enthusiasm for this year has been at a high level after last year’s state appearance. This group has potential to be a good team by the end of the season. We will have to understand our strengths and make a commitment to grow each game.
