HANNA – The Guernsey-Sunrise football team traveled to Hanna–Elk Mountain for a non-conference game this past week. It was a high scoring game as the Miners scored 95 to the Vikings’ 55.
Coach Reichert stated, “After spotting Hanna a big 44-6 lead, we scored before half to make it 44-13. The second half we got within 14 points, four different times, but Hanna had an immediate answer after each score before finally pulling away for good.”
Leaders in statistics:
Mason Collar totaled 463 total yards. Collar was responsible for seven touchdowns, 195 rushing yards (with one touchdown and a 70-yard kickoff return touchdown), 143 yds passing (four touchdowns), and 55 receiving yards resulting in one touchdown.
Tim Radcliff, who totaled 52 rushing yards with one touchdown, 93 receiving yards (four touchdowns), and 45 passing yards with one touchdown.
Ryker McConahay totaled 53 receiving yards, 10 passing yards, one fumble recovery and seven tackles.
“We preached attitude and effort all year. We knew the game would be tough with only six guys, but to go from down 44-6 to getting within 69-55 shows that the kids had the heart to win, but the gas tanks emptied before we could complete the comeback,” coach Reichert said. “We had to really balance injuries and practice schedules most of the season, and that kept us from being able to have enough stamina to keep up in a high-scoring game. If you want an example of a team that bought into what coaches were teaching them all year, about attitude, effort, working hard, having fun, and staying positive, then this is the team you need to look at. The final record didn’t indicate the amount of growth these boys showed throughout the season. Hopefully a lot of the boys who didn’t play this year see that football is a fun sport to play, and that Guernsey-Sunrise can be competitive. I can’t thank the seniors enough for buying into our philosophy of hard-nosed, physical football. Now we need the returning players to get their friends to come out next year so we can practice against other players instead of trash cans and imaginary people.”
