State representative visits with Guernsey students

GUERNSEY – This Monday, I had the opportunity to talk to District 5 Representative Scott Smith. He was elected to represent the people in Wyoming. I watched Smith talk to the kindergarten class and I also interviewed him.
He represented the Republican party in the election. Smith is one of the most intelligent people I have ever conversed with. Every single point he made he backed it up with more than enough evidence. He also backed himself up with his promise to uphold the Wyoming Constitution. He always made sure to give answers that not only upheld what he stands for but that are also morally correct.

Rep. Smith made a huge point he wants his voters to know: he is a normal human being just like you. He made sure that everyone he talked to knew that he was in no way more important than them. Smith chose to run for office because he knew we needed a better representation of the people.
Smith goes above and beyond when it comes to his job. Every question I asked him he was able to answer within seconds with paragraph answers. He knew facts that were astonishing to hear off the top of his head. Smith tries to stay away from the media because he is just like me and you. He doesn’t want the public to know all about his life. He wants to be able to make our state a better place while doing all the things someone not in his position does. Smith not only helps our state a lot but he loves the agriculture part of Wyoming. He knows it’s very important in Wyoming culture and puts it on a pedestal.
He told me about his job as a senator. For a certain number of days in the beginning of the year he goes to the state capital building in Cheyenne. He either signs bills or doesn’t sign them. He always keeps the people of Wyoming in mind when it comes to these. Smith, while so accomplished, crazed me with how humble he was. He always was focused on telling us why he loves what he does instead of talking about himself the whole time.
At the end of the interview, I asked Smith what advice he had for the youth, and he said to guard your heart, and always judge yourself before you judge others. Smith explained, often we are quick to point fingers at others instead of looking at ourselves and what we could have done better. After our 40 minutes of conversation, I can gladly say that Scott Smith is someone that Wyoming should be proud of having in our House of Representatives.
