The makings of a beautiful November sunset are actually caused by weather conditions. The light emanating from the sun is called a sun pillar, visible when sunlight reflects off the surfaces of falling hexagonal-shaped ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds. They are most often seen at sunrise or sunset.
