PowerSchool data breached

GUERNSEY – Last Wednesday, a live-feed post to parents, students, and staff at Guernsey-Sunrise schools received notification the district was confirmed to have been effected by the nationwide PowerSchool information system data breach on Dec. 28, 2024.

Platte Co. School District No. 2 superintendent Lisa Weigel said the school was notified on Jan. 8, 2025 of the cybersecurity breach which gave unauthorized access to certain teacher and staff information, but the district’s internal infrastructure was neither breached, nor a target.

PowerSchool hosted a webinar attended by local administrators and technology directors, which confirmed the stolen data primarily included details on names, emails, addresses and phone numbers. No malware was deployed in the incident, and there is no ongoing malicious activity in the PowerSchool environment.

Weigel said PowerSchool does not anticipate data being shared or made public, and the data most likely was deleted without further replication or dissemination.

“We apologize for this unfortunate situation. We will provide you any updated information when it becomes available to us. We do encourage you to be diligent in monitoring your information and or increase spam email and phone calls. Curtis Cook, G-S technology director, will be continuing to closely monitor further need, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have further questions,” Weigel said.

According to Platte County School District No. 1 (Wheatland and Glendo schools) administrative assistant Heather Jones, their system was not compromised.

The PowerSchool data breach incident has affected school districts across the nation and the world. According to K12dive.com, “PowerSchool’s cloud-based systems are used by over 55 million students and 17,000 educational customers in more than 90 countries.”

PowerSchool has not made any public official notifications of the breach.
