WHEATLAND – Veterans who were part of the Wheatland VFW 3558 celebrated Veteran’s Day not by just being honored, but by honoring their fellow comrades in arms.

The women’s auxiliary and the VFW 3558 veterans made a special trip to the Platte County Legacy Home where retired veterans who are currently residents at the assisted facility center.

The auxiliary not only baked cupcakes for those residents who came to observe their veterans being honored, but each veteran was given a hoodie, a stocking cap and a baseball cap signifying their specific branch in the military. Along with these gifts, there were special handmade cards with notes thanking the veterans that local children had created.

Kelly Mixon who is a part of the VFW and is nicknamed “Preacher” said, “It is a wonderful thing to do for those who gave so much of themselves.”

One of the veterans from the retirement home told Mixon after he received his hat and hoodie, “I have never been honored like this before.”

To the residents who could not make it to the service held in the meeting room, the Vets from 3558 went personally to their doors and delivered their gifts of appreciation.

The Platte County Legacy Home’s executive director, Josie Lauck said, “This is such a wonderful thing that these men and women do for our residents. Their eyes just light up when the veterans are announced and their gift is brought to their table to honor them.”
