Local reporter named photographer of the year

CHEYENNE – The 2024 Wyoming Press Association announced the winners of their 2024 contest at their conference held Jan. 24 – 25 in Cheyenne. The Platte County Record-Times received 11 pacemaker awards, and one major award: Division C Photographer of the Year for small weekly newspapers across Wyoming.
The Platte County Record-Times, a small weekly newspaper based in Wheatland, is part of Wyoming Newspapers, Inc., with large and small weekly newspapers in both the southeast (including the Guernsey Gazette) and western portions of the state.
“I would like to take a moment to recognize all those who came away with awards at this year’s Wyoming Press Association convention, most of whom won numerous awards! [This] goes to show we truly [are] the best-of-the-best in the state. I am proud of each of you for your dedication to the people in our communities and I could not be happier to see all your hard work rewarded by our colleagues,” Wyoming Newspapers, Inc. group publisher Rob Mortimore said.

Award winners included Jessica Oaks, Cali O’Hare, Sue Bruynes, Robert Galbreath, Lisa Phelps, Bailey Ervin, Don Cogger, Bryon Glathar, Rana Jones, Amanda Manchester, Kayne Pyatt, Virginia Giorgis, Torrington Telegram - best website (staff), Pinedale Roundup - best website (staff).
Record-Times reporter and photographer Lisa Phelps (who also reports for the Guernsey Gazette) won the title of photographer of the year for a portfolio of photos and a photo series which ran in the newspaper in 2024. She also won first place in the sports feature photo category for “Journey of Hope sunrise ride;” and honorable mentions in photography for feature photo “Fireman dwarfed by fireworks display;” and general news photo “Oftedahl crew measures depth with GPS.”
In reporting, Lisa Phelps won first place in education reporting for three submitted articles; second place for three articles each in both the business-energy reporting, and agriculture reporting categories; and honorable mention in in-depth reporting.
Record-Times general manager Bailey Ervin won second place for the spot news photo category with a photo “Vehicle tips over during sleet-storm.”
Lisa Phelps also won second place for a house ad titled “Way to go, Bulldogs!” The Record-Times newspaper staff won honorable mention for headline writing.
