G-SHS boys basketball win two at home

GUERNSEY – The Vikings had some tough games slated for this past week, two of the three were played. The game scheduled for last Saturday against Hulett at Guernsey has been postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up at some point. Tuesday Guernsey-Sunrise took on Banner County, Nebraska and won, 50-26. On Friday the Vikings handled Hanna-Elk Mountain with a score of 58-44.
Coach Steve Zimmerman had this to say about the week, “We played two games this week. Tuesday against Banner County we focused on ball pressure with our press causing 24 turnovers. We steadily built a lead. Our offensive production showed marked improvement in a reduction in turnovers and an increase in our shooting percentage. Julian Rodriguez and Mason Collar lead the defense with four and six steals. They also shot the ball well.”

The Vikings led the game the entire way and were up 34-26 at half. The closest the Miners could get was to within six during the third quarter, but the Vikings continued to get key baskets to keep the Miners at bay. It was a sweet revenge for the Vikings as they had fallen to the Miners during the pre-season tournament at Lingle by 23 points.
Collar led in points with 19, Rodriguez had eight, Isaac Cdebaca chipped in seven, Tim Ratcliffe had six, and each with two were Austin Gretch, Nathan VanNatter, and Conner Bristow.
Coach Zimmerman continued discussing the second matchup for G-SHS, “Friday we got a must win conference game against HEM. Our defense was very good. HEM had beat us by 25 [points] before Christmas, so this time it was good to see the boys respond the way they did.”
Collar led in points with 12, Gretch had 10, Rodriguez scored nine, CdeBaca and VanNatter each had seven, Adam Bondalos added six, Bristow chipped in four, and Ratcliffe had three. Rodriguez led the team with four assists.
