CHEYENNE – Wyoming Game and Fish Department is hosting its annual Kids Free Fishing Day this weekend, June 7, at locations around the state.
While kids can enjoy free fishing all day on June 7 from any spot in the state normally allowing the activity. The nearest two official Wyoming Game and Fish (WGFD) free fishing day event locations are in Casper or Cheyenne; there will be no location in Platte County this year. Local watering holes will be waiving entrance fees in observance of the free fishing day.
Residents desiring to participate in the Casper WGFD Kids Free Fishing event will meet at Harry Yesness Pond starting at 9 a.m. and will last through 1 p.m.
Participants at this site will be provided with North Platte Walleyes Unlimited fishing poles and many local businesses, as well as the community recreation foundation who sponsored this years’ event in Casper, will have other treats and prizes for attendees.
The Cheyenne WGFD event will be at Bell Reservoir on the Lazy Brown Ranch, about halfway between Cheyenne and the city of Laramie. This event will begin at 10 a.m. and run through 2 p.m. Participants will receive a free fishing pole, tackle box and lunch, of which registration is required. Participants are asked to find those details on the WGFD website (wgfd.wyo.gov).
Fort those traveling across the state, other WGFD Kids Free Fishing events will be at: Afton Golf Course Pond in Afton; Beck Lake COmplex in Cody; R Park between Jackson and Wilson; Luckey Pond in Lander; Dudley Key Fields Pond in Pinedale; Rendezvous Ponds in Riverton; Pete’s Pond in Dubois; UP Ice Ponds in Evanston; Kemmerer Community Pond by the overpass in Kemmerer; Paul J. Watacha Pond in Rock Springs; and Bear Lodge Pond at Burgess Junction in Dayton.
Every year the Wyoming Game and Fish Department invites anglers to celebrate its Free Fishing Day and designates the first Saturday of June (National Boating and Fishing Week) as free fishing day when anyone – not just kids – can fish in Wyoming. The only exceptions are the Wind River Reservation, Yellowstone National Park, which always require licensing; and of course, private land which always requires landowner permission.
All fishing regulations, such as creel and size limits, gear restrictions and stream closures remain in effect during the day-long free fishing day and residents are encouraged to be aware of those before heading out to any watering hole to fish.
