Coal car derails northwest of Guernsey

Posted

GUERNSEY – No one was injured when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway coal car derailed on the Canyon Subdivision just northwest of Guernsey early Tuesday.

According to company spokeswoman Maia LaSalle, BNSF reported a main track derailment of a single loaded coal car about 2:16 a.m. The derailment appears to have been caused by a broken wheel on the car, she said.

No hazmat situation was associated with the incident. BNSF crews responded and heavy equipment was on-site as of Tuesday afternoon.
With no current route around, BNSF crews were working to re-route train traffic as necessary on Tuesday.

In 2018, BNSF hauled 1.9 million coal shipments, according to the Fort Worth, Texas-based company’s website.

The BNSF railway network consists of 32,500 route miles in 28 states and three Canadian provinces.

BNSF is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.
