Camp barbershop to offer free haircuts for vets

GUERNSEY – From someone who’s been in combat boots, the little things make alot of difference for veterans. On Nov. 14 – 16, free haircuts will be given to veterans in honor of Veteran’s Day at Camp Guernsey.
Cosmetologist Stacia Smith has worked with base leadership to establish a barber shop, Patriotic Cuts, at the general mercantile building at Camp Guernsey, with haircut services available to both service members and civilians, men or women – anyone who wants to come on base to get a haircut.
A veteran herself, Smith grew up in Yoder and graduated from Southeast High School. Though she has a salon business in Casper, she wanted to give back to servicemembers and “come back home.” She and her friend Tanya Krix, a cosmetologist from Rawlins, are joining together in this venture.

Beginning in June, and during the busy season, the duo was at Camp Guernsey two days a week. Currently, they are on base once a month, and anyone interested in a cut can give them a call at 307-554-6019, or make an appointment on Square at stacia-smith.square.site/ . Smith said someday she would like to offer full salon services, and is increasing her available-to-purchase product lines, however with the limitations of the current barbershop setup, only haircuts can be performed. Additionally, so as not to undercut local salon businesses in Guernsey, the cost of haircuts on base will be market price.
Smith is enthusiastic about the opportunity to meet a need for soldiers and airmen at Camp Guernsey. “I’m a disabled vet, and when I’m there, it’s like I never took off the uniform,” she said.
A fair warning: Smith admits she loves to talk, and even if there is a line, both cosmetologists give “quick but awesome ‘cuts.”
“Be prepared for a good haircut and a great story,” Smith said.
Of course, in the typical way of a soldier’s heart, Smith emphasized, it’s not about herself, it’s about those still in uniform. “My service doesn’t matter – showcase the soldiers. I’m there for them.”
The free haircuts for veterans will be offered at the camp the afternoon of Nov. 14 and all day on the 15th and 16th.
