What a place we live in! Yes, it can get hot, and the wind blows – a lot, but there is no other place I’d rather be. It is easy enough to get around our county, and there is a lot to see and do here. The locals plan many events that offer an opportunity to connect with neighbors and visitors alike, and there’s always some new inspiring sight that may prompt you to pull the phone out of your pocket to see if you can capture a brief memory to ponder later.
If you hear anyone saying they’re “bored,” drag them along to one of the many events throughout the summer at any of the towns in Platte County, take them to the pool, the park, miniature golf, or the ball field. Want to go farther afield and use some of those creative juices to make up stories of “what must have been,” or “who could have been here before” while driving, hiking or biking the many trails at either Guernsey or Glendo State Parks. You can even make a splash with water sports, sun bathing, sandcastle building, or fishing at the many lakes and reservoirs within the borders of Platte County. You can even take in bronc riding or ranch rodeos, a night out with live country music, or a quiet evening watching the stars.

There are several museums with lots to see and learn, libraries and senior centers with not only books, but movies and regular summer get-togethers designed to bring a smile to participants. There is a movie theatre and movies in the park, and the state parks host multiple get-togethers, including movie-watching on the water, bike with a ranger, get to know your emergency responders, learn about wildlife, and enjoy being in the beautiful, expansive Wyoming outdoors.
This weekend, there was even the opportunity to try your hand at throwing an atlatl at an archaeologic symposium at historic Sunrise after touring the town’s historic buildings and visiting with flintknappers and world-renown archaeologists actively working to uncover more artifacts that can piece together the puzzle of the life and culture of ancient PaleoIndian peoples.
The nice thing about this? You can stop by one of the many quality restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, or stop for a cool treat along your travels. It’s like a really good vacation – without the hassle and expense of making long-distance travel arrangements.
Yep. I really like it here.
