Golf team wins at regionals
Isaac Cdebaca of Guernsey blasts a shot out of a hazard at the tournament in Torrington. He is playing for the WHS golf team.
BUFFALO –The Wheatland golfers had another great week on the links. The Buffalo Golf Course played host to the 3A East Regional golf tournament this past week and it was a test for all 63 golfers in the field. With that said, the WHS boys team came out victorious with a regional championship after winning by 95 shots over host team Buffalo.
The boys also walked away with five all-conference awards when the tournament concluded.
On the boys’ side, Isaac Cdebaca of Guernsey had a pair of 79’s to finish fourth individually and earn All-Conference. Tate Nichols continued his hot streak by winning his fifth tournament in row by shooting 68 and 70 to win by 17 shots. To make things sweeter, coming in second, third, fourth, and eighth were also Bulldog golfers. Their results were: Jacob Miller 82 and 73 to finish second, Brecken Sandlian 82 and 74 to finish third, and Dylan Nelson 90 and 83 to tie for eighth. On day one the boys shot 311 as a team and day two, 296, for a two-day total of 607.
Every boy in the starting lineup earned all-conference since the top ten placers get that award.
“The Buffalo Golf Course is one of the best golf courses in the state and the fairways and greens played firm and fast which made it difficult to score. Add the fact that the greens in Buffalo are probably the hardest greens in the state to read. The mountain effect causes you to second guess your read and have putts break when they look dead straight,” coach Tony Nichols said. “We told our players to worry more about the speed of the putts and to not beat themselves up when they misread them. We are so proud of both our boys’ and girls’ efforts this past week. To have every starting golfer in our lineup earn all-conference is not a fluke. Winning regionals on the boy’s side and earning all-conference was every golfer’s goal heading into regionals and they did not disappoint. This is a special group. This group flat out plays for each other and knows the individual awards will come if they do great things as a team,”
Coach Nichols added, “We feel every golfer in our lineup is heading to state next week in Rawlins with the ‘we can’ mentality because they all believe in each other. When a group cares less about individual accolades and more about hanging banners in the gym, special things are bound to happen.”
