ROCK RIVER – The Vikings traveled to Rock River last Friday night for a conference game. Although Rock River made a game of it in a very physical game, Guernsey-Sunrise came out on top and evened their season record to 5-5 while the Longhorns remain without a win in conference play.
The Longhorns came out and tried to slow down the fast-breaking Vikings and keeping the possessions to a minimum, the Vikings still managed to take the lead and hold on for an 8-3 advantage. Rock River tried to challenge the bigs in the second quarter with their own six-foot, seven-inch wide-body senior center, Johnny Moore. The Longhorns outscored the Vikings 17-10 and took a slight two-point halftime lead.
Guernsey-Sunrise came out and jumped out to a five-point lead after the third and both teams played even in the fourth. The defensive battle accounted for the low scoring 40-35 victory for the Vikings.
Dawson Bingham was the leading scorer for both teams with 14 points followed by Caleb Christensen with 10, Aidan Noggle and Tristan Hohnholt both scored eight points to round out the scoring. Freshman Mason Collar led the team in rebounds with six. The Vikings were 14-28 at the free throw line for the game.
“Rock River outsized us in every position and surprised us in the first half with a man-to-man defense,” first-year head coach Steve Zimmerman said. “Late in the second quarter, we let them gain momentum and the lead. The second half we were very deliberate in our offensive attacking their big men in the lane. Dawson Bingham and Caleb Christensen both had strong second halves scoring 20 of our 22 points. Three areas we saw improvement in were a reduction in turnovers, we took care of the ball for the most part; second was shot selection, not at a frenzied pace; and third, we controlled the flow of the game in the fourth quarter. We got to work on aspects of the game we might have to deal with at regionals. We focused on time management and situational defense. I was proud of the boys’ growth and effort in these areas.”
The Vikings will play three games this week: Monday, they are on the road at Niobrara County, followed by a home game against Sioux County on Thursday and on the road against Lingle-Fort Laramie on Saturday.
