Guernsey-Sunrise High School track team looking toward state

Posted

TORRINGTON – It was a good end of the week as far as the Guernsey-Sunrise track program went as 19 athletes qualified to participate at state.

"As coaches, we never changed our expectations for the kids:  show up every day with a good attitude and give good effort, and do what you're told,” coach Troy Reichert said. “Most of the kids bought in, and the results showed at regionals. For the girls, our goal was to get as many to state as we could and let them taste some success. I shocked some girls the day entries were due by telling them I put them in some different events, but they bought in and did extremely well.”

On the boys’ side, Caleb Christensen, heading for the track program at Chadron State College in the fall, medaled in both the shot put and the discus.

"The boys were hungry all year, and it showed in the work they put in during practice. We set an expectation of finishing top three at regionals, with a goal of second. The boys not only accomplished a runner-up finish, but almost took down Southeast for the championship in the process,” Reichert said. “With state looming, it's vital that the kids stay hungry and keep working. We didn't have a lot of first, second and third place finishes at regionals, so they're going to have to work extremely hard to get on the podium and win a medal at state. It was great seeing the boys team title come down to the final race on Saturday. We needed a third-place finish in the 4x1, and those four boys battled Hulett each lap. All four boys took control on the final 75 yards of their laps and made sure they brought home some hardware.”
