A graveside service with military honors was held Monday, June 10, 2013 for lifelong area resident George Martinez. The service was officiated by his cousin Olivia Martinez of Cheyenne and Guernsey VFW Post 4471 afforded the military rites.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were Steven Hypes, Derrick Sisson, Gus Apodaca, Dudley Barnes, David Walker, and Mike Smeltzer.
He passed away June 1, 2013 in Cheyenne following an extended illness.
He was born October 8, 1943 to Paul and Celia Martinez in Torrington. He was raised and educated in Sunrise, graduating from Sunrise High School in 1962. He was an All-State back for the Sunrise Miners football in his senior season and also earned .
He served in the U.S. Air Force and married Paula J. Melvin on June 3, 1967 in Fairfax, Virgina. They were parents to Marc, Tracy and Heidi.
A great cook, George opened Burrito Brothers Restaurant and along with family and friends, served the public for 25 years.
When not cooking, he could be found on the golf course or throwing out a fishing line somewhere. He enjoyed the Wyoming Cowboys and any sporting events.
He also served as an announcer and timer for high school football games for the Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings for many seasons. He enjoyed watching his children compete in sports during their high school years.
George was preceded in death by his wife Paula in April, 2009, his parents, and a sister Mary Margaret.
He is survived by his son Marc Martinez, and daughters Tracy (Ernie) Carpenter and Heidi Martinez; grandchildren Teesha Rodriguez, Taysia Martinez and Zoe Bolinger; brothers Rudy, Robert, Pedro and Anthony; and sisters Jo Anne Bueno and Carmen (Rick) Castenada.
