GUERNSEY--Nearing the end of what’s been one of the toughest seasons in recent Viking basketball history, Friday night turned out to be a very bright spot as Guernsey-Sunrise slipped past Banner County 66-64 in overtime and claim their second win of the year. And perhaps even more importantly, they got back the services of senior guard Cody Quynn who’s spent most of the season on the bench recovering from a broken hand.

Down 24-21, the Vikings outscored the Wildcats 20-10 in the third quarter to take a seven point lead heading into the final eight minutes. But just as quickly, the Wildcats answered in the fourth quarter, reeling off 18 points to Guernsey’s 11 to knot the score at 52 each. The battle was on and the Vikings managed to get the win by outscoring Harrisburg 14-12.

On Saturday, the Sioux County Warriors took advantage of some strong offensive rebounding to claim a 48-34 win over the Vikings in the east gym.

The Vikes were down by three at the half but a cold offensive effort in the third quarter put them in a tough spot and they couldn’t make up the difference in the final eight minutes.

The Vikings wrap up the final week of the regular season as they host a combined team from Chugwater and Glendo tonight. The varsity girls will play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 7 p.m.

On Friday, Hanna-Elk Mountain will come to Guernsey in the Vikes’ final home game this season. The junior varsity teams will play at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity girls at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Vikes will make the road trip across the canyon to take on Rock River.

JV boys will play at 1 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 2:30 p.m. and the varsity boys at 4 p.m.

The Vikes will have to survive a play-in game on Monday, February 20th to qualify for the regional tournament in Douglas, February 23-25.

The state tournament will be held in Casper March 2-4.
