Vikings bring home hardware from 1-A state basketball tournament!

Modified: Wednesday, Mar 12th, 2014

Guernsey-Sunrise earned their best state basketball tournament finish since the 2003 season after defeating Kaycee 47-43 for third place in Casper last weekend.

CASPER--The Guernsey-Sunrise Vikings dodged a huge bullet named Dubois in Thursday’s opening round game of the 1-A state tournament but the win put the Vikings up against the top-ranked Burlington Huskies on Friday and that proved to be an even bigger challenge.

After holding off the Rams 48-42, the Vikings found themselves behind from the tip-off with the Huskies and ended up on the short end of a 53-43 final score. The loss sent the Vikes to a Saturday game with Kaycee where they exacted some revenge on the Bucs with a 47-43 win and claimed third place overall.

It was the best state tournament finish for Guernsey-Sunrise since 2003 when the Vikes beat Albin to take third place.

While it wasn’t quite the goal the Vikings had in mind, the third-place finish was a step up from last year’s consolation championship. Losing only one starter, Meredith Hollister, and sixth man Isaac Carr to graduation, the Vikings have much to look forward to in the 2014-2015 season.
