Just how long will it take for 1,000 plastic ducks to travel from bridge to bridge on the North Platte River around the community of Guernsey? With the water running high and fast, it could be a quicker race this year, but for three lucky duck owners, a fast duck will result in some fast cash!
On Saturday, August 21, the Economic Development and Tourism Group will hold their second annual Duck Daze Duck Race. At 10:30 a.m. sharp, 1,000 numbered plastic ducks will be dropped from the West River Bridge on Highway 26 and the first three to reach the South River Bridge will be declared the winners. Top prize this year is $750, second wins $500 and third takes home $250.
But that won’t be the first event of the day. A 5K Duck Dash run will be held that morning. Registration begins at 7 a.m. at the south end of the walking path. A $25 registration fee covers a spot in the race, a t-shirt, a Duck Daze ticket for the duck race and awards and snacks following the Duck Dash. The Dash begins at 8 a.m.
The Duck Race will follow at 10:30 a.m.
At 1 p.m., a Mud Volleyball tournament sponsored by Guernsey’s Tri-City Parks and Rec will be held at the Old Timers’ Rodeo Grounds. A $75 registration per team must be submitted to the Parks and Rec office. All registrations made prior to the Duck Race will include a $25 Quack Pack that includes five duck race tickets, a commemorative duck and discount coupons that may be used at local businesses.
At 5 p.m., bed races sponsored by the Platte County Chamber of Commerce will be held at West Park. Beds will be furnished-prizes will be awarded to the team with the fastest time for the course and also for the best costumes. A $25 registration fee is required for each four-person team.
A concert by local band (Birthday) Paradox will begin at 8 p.m. at the Davis Park Amphitheater. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and listen or even dance to some great music to wrap up the day.
