Zynda pleads guilty in tax evasion case

Posted: Tuesday, Mar 19th, 2013

Leslie D. Zynda

GUERNSEY--In a virtually silent U.S. District courtroom last Tuesday morning in Cheyenne, the truth was finally revealed as Leslie D. Zynda, former clerk-treasurer for the Town of Guernsey, pled guilty to one felony count of income tax evasion before U. S. Magistrate Judge Kelly Rankin.

According to the charging documents, Zynda filed fraudulent joint income tax returns for the calendar years 2005 through 2011 on behalf of her and her husband, understating their tax liability by $75,089, the amount due on unreported income of $276,706.

When asked by the court as to the source of that income, Zynda quietly stated, “Money that I took improperly from the Town of Guernsey.”

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by the U. S. Attorney’s Office in Wyoming and spanned nearly two years.

“As tax filing season approaches, this is a reminder that all taxpayers should file complete and accurate tax returns; all income regardless of the source is taxable,” said Stephen Boyd, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation for the State of Wyoming.
