Guernsey celebrates‘The Week of the Young Child’

Posted: Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

With some beautiful weather on a spring morning, children from the Guernsey Early Childhood Develpment Center do some special decorating at Johnston’s Corner with a huge box of clolored chalk.

GUERNSEY--Every year in April, across the nation, children are celebrated through a week’s worth of special activities to mark The Week of the Young Child.

Sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the week helps to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

Established in 1971, Week of the Young Child helps bring recognition to the idea that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child(tm) is a time to plan how we-as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation-will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.

Accredited by NAEYC, the Guernsey Early Childhood Development Center held several special events last week to join the celebration.

On Wednesday, 20 students from the Head Start program walked to Johnston’s Corner to make pizza for lunch. While their pizzas were cooking, the children eyed created some great sidewalk art with chalk.

This year’s theme was Early Years are Learning Years.
