Griffith hailed as PCSD 2 Teacher of the Year

Posted: Monday, Feb 6th, 2012

Platte County School District #2 Superintendent Dave Barker announces Diana Griffith, at-risk coordinator and math teacher at Guernsey-Sunrise, the 2011 Teacher of the Year for PCSD#2.

Diana came to Guernsey-Sunrise four-and-a-half years ago as at-risk coordinator to begin a program for students in danger of not graduating. She expanded the program to help all students struggling in classes and in danger of failing. “Students falling behind in classes, and failing classes, have a high risk for not graduating. Diana has focused her work on helping students pass their classes, overcome obstacles, and graduate on time,” said Barker.

After working as a special education paraeducator at Guernsey-Sunrise for 10 years, Diana went to Chadron State College to get her Bachelor’s degree in education, with endorsements in mathematics and business. Prior to returning to Guernsey-Sunrise, she taught math at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Torrington for 12 years. In addition to her at-risk duties, Diana also teaches mathematics.

“I returned to school to earn my Bachelor’s degree in Education,” said Griffith. “After working as a special education para I realized that I really did want to grow up to be a teacher. I love working with the students, watching the light bulb “click” when they get a concept, watching and being part of their successes, and pushing them to work harder when they don’t succeed.”

Diana graduated from Chadron State College Magna Cum Laude. She is actively involved in her church and serves on the Parish Council, chairing the Ministries Department and Altar Servers. She administers Safe Environment trainings to adults and youth in the church and remains involved with St. Joseph’s Children’s Home through it’s Outreach program.

“(Students) are the reason I return each year,” said Griffith. “They are our future; I know we are in good hands. Being named the “Teacher of the Year” is a great honor. I would like to thank the administrators, staff, parents and students for their support over the past four years.”

The board or trustees, administration, teachers and students congratulate Diana Griffith on her selection as Platte County School District #2 Teacher of the Year.
